Chapter Nine
JORDAN
Jordan looked at his buzzing phone. It was Tessaâsâ¦no, Brettâs house. Not Brettâs phone but the actual house phone, which had never happened before.
He glanced at the time as he swiped to connect the call. It was six p.m. âHello?â
âUm, Uncle Jordan?â
Ethan.
âEthan, yeah, itâs me. Whatâs up, buddy?â
âUm, you said to call you if we needed you.â Ethanâs voice was quiet andâ¦like the small kid he was.
âHey, Ethan, of course. What do you need?â
âUmâ¦â
âIs Uncle Brett there?â Unease settled in his gut.
âYeah, but heâsâ¦heâsâ¦I dunno, sad or mad. He said he was okay, but I donât know.â
Jordan closed his eyes. It felt like heâd been waiting for this moment for weeks. Brett had been handling things well for over a month now, but his ordered world had basically been hanging by tenterhooks since the funeral.
They talked every day. Theyâd gone to the zoo with the kids on Saturday, and Brett had relayed the syrup situation. Quite frankly, Jordan had been shocked the syrup hadnât pushed Brett over the edge.
The thing was, his best friend still hadnât found his groove. Sure, he was functioning and he had a routine down. But Brett hadnât really let go or relaxed, and Jordan had been waiting for the shoe to drop.
He had a hunch it was finally happening.
âOkay, buddy. Iâm glad you called. Iâm going to come over, okay? Donât tell Uncle Brett, just hang up and go get the kids in front of the TV or something. Iâll be there in about ten minutes. Okay?â
Ethan mumbled an agreement, and Jordan said goodbye and hung up. Jumping in his car, he let possible scenarios go through his head. More than likely, Brett was brain-fried and needed sleep and recharging.
Jordan started to text Mike but then felt bad enough to make the phone call. âHey, man,â he said when Mike picked up. âIâm headed to Brettâs instead of the bar, sorry. Ethan actually called me.â
âShit, you think things have finally gone haywire?â Jordan wasnât the only one worrying about Brett.
âProbably. Anyway, sorry.â They chatted a moment longer before hanging up. Arriving at Brettâs, he let himself into the house through the garage as he usually did. Not sure what he was going to find, he headed toward the living room where he heard the TV going and found the boys there on the couch.
âHey, kiddos.â
âUncle Jordan!â Tommy ran at him, followed by Drew. Ethan just sat up straighter. Jordan threw his arms around the twins and lifted them both, hugging them hard and kissing their cheeks.
He opened his mouth to ask where Lizzie was when the toddler in question came barreling in. Her eyes widened upon seeing him, and she came right into his arms when he leaned down to her. He picked her up and turned back to Ethan. âWhereâs Uncle Brett?â
âUnca Jor-an.â Lizzie patted him on the chest. He grinned at her and turned back to Ethan.
Ethan shrugged. âI tried to keep Lizzie in here, but she wouldnât stay.â
âLizzie, baby, what do you want to watch?â Jordan grinned as the boys groaned.
